Stewart's Melville

Welcome to Stewart’s Melville College which, together with The Mary Erskine School and their co-educational Junior School, provides a unique system of independent education in beautiful grounds close to the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city.

Principal's welcome

Stewarts Melville

Our web site is designed to give you a flavour of the warmth of welcome which you and your children will receive from staff and boys of Stewart's Melville College if you are able to visit us in person.

The boys, and all the adults who look after them are proud to be members of schools which blend a co-educational Junior School and Sixth Form with single-sex but very closely-twinned secondary schools.

Ethos and Values

The children in our schools grow up to be proud, respectful, self-confident and articulate, ready to speak their minds but also curious to find out the views of others and to learn more. We are proud that their self-assurance is matched by a disarmingly unassuming and unpretentious manner.

They are straightforward, positive, cheerful and modest. When we watch them on the sports field we are aware of their fiercely competitive spirit but also of their good manners, sportsmanship and decency which is demonstrated by grace in victory and dignity in defeat.

Stewarts MelvilleWhen we watch them on the stage, singing in choirs or playing in orchestras we are aware of their quiet self-confidence, their high expectations and their pride in performance exemplified by their smiles.

A Professional Approach

All that we do in our schools, either as adults or as young boys and girls, is marked by professionalism.

Every teacher is committed to drawing the maximum from every child intellectually, culturally, athletically and personally. The boys and girls respond to this by displaying a real determination to do their best in the classrooms and by their involvement in the enormous array of opportunities open to them from morning to evening six (or sometimes seven!) days a week.

The result of all this commitment is a well-balanced, smiling, eager young person who gives the impression of having fun.

Children and Society

Although Stewart’s Melville College and The Mary Erskine School have their own distinctive traditions they are bound together by the same educational philosophy and belief in the innate talents of the individual and the immutable benefits of using these for the greater prosperity and happiness of the community at large.

Our young people grow up to take their places in the adult world as committed, confident and caring members of society and we hope very much that you will want to come to visit our schools so that you can meet with some of them and find out more about what makes our schools unique.

Please telephone or email  at any time if you require any further information or if you wish to make an individual appointment to look round - we shall be delighted to see you.
